Starting a blog is one of the most popular tactics to making money online. Writing and maintaining a blog is also known as content marketing. This type of marketing strategy helps to get you readers that you can turn into subscribers with tools such as Viral List Crusher.
Plenty of aspiring internet marketers start to write blog posts day in and day out. They begin with so much enthusiasm, hoping that their efforts will pay out in big time. Because, that’s how the big gurus do it right – they write and write and write and BAM! They make money!
3 months and absolutely FRUITLESS commissions later, the newbies pull out their hair in frustration. Instead of working out what’s wrong with their strategy, they fall victim to the latest “get rich quick” fad. Of course, this method is even less effective, and now they have even less money than before.
Does this situation sound similar to you?
I know things like this are disheartening. You try and you try but you just don’t get results. What could be wrong with your approach?
The thing is, writing a blog by itself isn’t a winning tactic. You must have a greater online marketing strategy. Only after you have a great web marketing strategy figured out, can you implement it and finally get the results you’ve been drooling for.
So yes, “blogging for bucks” is still a valid strategy, but you must add to it. With just a few tweaks to what you are already doing, you could be attracting a lot more visitors to your website.
1. Carefully choose a niche that’s right for you
This is the one that most new internet marketers get wrong straight out of the gate.
Just because famous people like Peng Joon or ShoeMoney are making hundreds of thousands of dollars per month online, doesn’t mean you should choose the same niche.
It’s true that “making money online” is one of the most profitable niches. But if you yourself haven’t made any money online, it’s difficult to convince people to buy products from you about that topic.
Instead, choose a niche you are already familiar with. Even gardening has a huge potential for profit, if you know who you are talking to. The better you understand your readers, the more relevant content you can write on your blog that they will accept and appreciate.
2. Participate in forums in your chosen niche
Yes, participating in forums is one of the most time consuming activities of internet marketing. This is good though, because there is a double benefit to posting in forums.
One: you become familiar with your market. You learn their language, you identify their pain. From this you can figure out what kind of offer would hit their hot button – meaning more sales for you!
Two: you can get referral traffic. Usually you are allowed to make a forum signature where you can put the link of your website. If you post useful content, people will be interested in checking out your site.
On one of my websites, people that come from a forum I’m active in stay 3 times longer than people who find my site through “cold” search engine results. When these people read your blog, this is your chance to turn them into buying subscribers.
3. Make trackbacks and pingbacks to related blogs in your niche
Talk about other people’s content!
This is a good tactic to apply, for two reasons. One, you can rely on this method when you run out of ideas for blog posts. This is also called “content curation”, meaning you simply reblog the other post but add your commentary and thoughts on it (and link back to the original post).
Two, when you create the link to their blog, your blog could show up on their blog! This is known as a trackback, which means their blog tracks other blogs that talk about theirs. I have had one case where I “accidentally” linked to a blog and my site stayed on their recent comments list long enough for people to notice and start visiting. All because of one simple link out and trackback!
